Lebanon - Proxy Battleground

Following the bombing by Israel of Beirut Airport on 13 July 2006, I began e-mailing my friends with news from Beirut. My wife, daughter and I were evacuated from Beirut on 20 July 2006, but my wife's family and our friends remain there. I created this blog to post my original e-mails, and express my anger and frustration at what is happening in Lebanon - once again, a proxy battleground. I hope you find something to think about in the posts below. I welcome your comments.

Point / Counterpoint

I'm very pleased to report two comments from someone called "What Is Occupation" that diverge strongly from my own views. You can see these comments in reponse to my posts "Hush Money" and the "Book of Ehud".
In the interests of spirited debate, I welcome opposing views. However, it is more useful if those views are expressed coherently and provide some sources to back up arguments, rather than simply asserting one's prejudices.

However, in particular I do not appreciate comments that seek to diminish the loss of civilian life in Lebanon (see "What is Occupation"'s comment in "The Book of Ehud" along the lines that "Israel kills 500 [in Lebanon] and you act like it's Darfur". Comments like this indicate to me that the writer is horribly prejudiced, or mildly retarded (or both, they're not mutually exclusive).

So, thank you, "What Is Occupation", for clarifying your prejudices. I am now forewarned that your comments are to be taken only for their comedy value. Perhaps when you graduate from primary school and have read some big-boy books you can contribute usefully to a grown-up debate.

    Jhon,
I know occupation is one of your few commentators but he frankly does not deserve that much attention :-)

He speaks with arrogance and claims anything that comes out of his mouth as fact as all ignorants do.

Since this post is all about him I too will give him the attention he does not deserve and will attempt to verify some of his claims in the posts you mention.

he says [the US] "has given BILLIONs to egypt that exceeds the amount given to israel"

A quick search reveals this is mistaken or lying.

For example according to this the amount of direct aid to israel is at least twice that of egypt. If we factor in the indirect aid (discounts on military equipement, loans ...) the ratio is even bigger in favor of israel.

In the other post he says "44,000 Lebanese people killed by Lebanese people in the civil war...

israel kills 500 and you act like it's darfur.."

I think like to throw numbers around and hope that people will be hung up on the numbers and not realize the sentence means nothing and implies nothing at all...

I will assume everything he said is true 100%.
I will assume only 500 died.
I will assume it is OK to kill "only" 500 civilians.
I will assume you are acting like it's darfur.
I will assume some Lebanese party killed 44000 Lebanese on its own in the civil war Israel syria etc killed no one and I will re-read the sentence.

    It still means nothing!

Would it make any sense to say
"the Germans killed millions of jews during WWII ...
Hezbollah Kills 200 and you act like it's darfur"

Would that make Hizbollah's action OK for Occupation or anyone else in Israel?

Of course it means absolutely nothing how many people were killed by other groups years ago in previous circumstances, a crime is a crime even if someone else committed a bigger crime some day before!

Frankly from reading his comments here and elsewhere I ave no idea if he is really naive and believe what he says or malicious and trying to mislead people who read his comments.

Oh well just another anonymous coward.
